The air tasted of oxidized copper and old dreams. A voice boomed in the foam, a liquid vibration that rattled Alex's marrow. To walk the
path, McQueen, you must first shed the weight of your name. Small painted hands began to reach from the tide. Porcelain fingers, cold and unyielding, grasping at the hem of the red cloak. And it goes, "The gallery of the hollow-eyed." As Alex descended in the coral staircase, the water didn't wet the skin. It pressed against the mind like a heavy
velvet curtain. The walls were lined with thousands of dolls, their glass eyes tracking McQueen's every tremor. These were not toys, but reliquaries >> Oh, I'm getting hot. This is getting me hot, baby. Each jaw wore face Alex knew, a primary school teacher, a first love, a mother, but their features were melting, the wax dripping into the
hungry maw of the deep. "Do you remember the scent of rain on asphalt, Alex?" A doll whispered, its jaw clicking rhythmically. Alex tried to grasp the memory, but it slipped away like a silverfish into the dark. The fear forgetting was a physical parasite here, a sting sting a scorpion tail coiled
around the the psyche, injecting a venom that turned history into white noise. The dolls giggled like a sound breathing and breaking teacups, and they began to pluck the threads from Alex's red hood.
