It's just like I'm not like everything is real. So that's why some of it's embarrassing, some of it's like stupid and it's like, you know, some of it's eye opening. It's really interesting being able to watch yourself on video and stuff. And I was never able to do it until I started doing the show. I was always too self-conscious about looking at myself. That was a recent
only recently I was able to get over that, you know, basically when I started um just jumping on panels pretty drunk, but I was like, "Hey, I can do this. I know how to I can do this. I can do this." I came to the most hostile. I handled more hostile panels than my show. Like it's like imagine like you go to a a panel and everybody is Berto. Like there's like eight people there.
They're all different ages, all different sexes and stuff, but they're all Berto. They're just screaming at the top of their lungs. Nonsense. I can't understand. And it's like everyone's just talking over themsel. And it's like I just sat I sat there last time I tried to go on on the the Good show. I sat there for like probably 30 40 minutes and she put like my name was Jeffrey Dmer. She always puts my name Jeffrey Dmer. And I was sitting in there
and like coming on the show wanting to say hi or something. And guess who was in the chat? Berto was in the chat. He's actually he's over there, too. I mean, it's like it's like it's like birds Bertos of a feather flock together, right? I mean, it has to be something weird like that. But, I mean, you know, I just I kind of like the ugly duckling among those people. You know, they're like, "Oh, look at this weird ugly
duckling." And then it's like I turn out I'm a beautiful swan or or you know, some people will say goose, but like I really don't like some of the uh some of the analogies that can make from that. I'll say swan even though swan's not that great either. I I maybe Phoenix, but it's a little bit of a depressing story, too. I mean, I just like to be I'm just happy I'm a human being. I'd like to
keep my skin. I'd like to keep, you know, I'd like to like not be set on fire. I'd like even I understand the metaphorical being reborn and like all of us has has to pass away. I prefer not to be lit lit on fire again. I have passive memories of that. Actually, it's not as horrible as you would think because it's like a kind of like a bad dream and it's like it is painful, but it's like it kind of turns into ecstasy
when it's like, you know, you're basically half char. Anyway, uh I do have memories of that like pretty vivid memories, you know. I do also have um um a witch Mary Sanford in my ancestry. If you want to hear the story, I can tell you the story of of my uh my great great grandmother, Mary Sanford. I'll pull it up. I think it's
interesting story and I'll tell you a little story cuz it's around Halloween and so I actually have done my genealogy like really carefully and um I have um learned that this is definitely a relative of mine. I was like seeing like witch trials like when on the pictures like when I was like um found this person in my tree. Okay, so here's the story of Mary Sanford for Halloween and
everybody. This is it is actually a good Halloween story. So this is u uh this is from Legends of America. Um, okay. So, this is kind of the little little backstory. So, it says, "While not nearly as famous as the Salem, Massachusetts witch trials of 1692, witch hunts in Connecticut began decades
earlier in 1647 and lasted intermittently until 1697. As part of this greater madness, the Hartford witch panic began in 1662. In the Puritan settlements of the new world, these highly religious, conservative, righteous, and intolerant people looked for something or someone to blame for any hardship that these
might include illness, weather, Indian attacks, or even something as simple as food spoilage. Witchcraft was often the scapegoat, and the eyes would quickly turn to anyone who did not strictly conform to the harsh harsh religious, social, and personal standards of the community. More often than not, these accused were women. Okay. And so then there's a picture of
it says bewitched girl and it has some like woman on the floor in hysterics, right? And then it says I mean anybody that has has a girlfriend when you go out and drink too much has had that moment happen to them but they called it hysterics back then. But anyway in the spring of 1662 Connecticut's witch hunting peaked in Hartford. The panic was set off with the death of 8-year-old Elizabeth Kelly
whose parents were convinced that she had been bewitched. At about the same time, another young woman named Anne Cole began to have fits, and this too were blamed on witchcraft. Soon, several other people in Hartford came forward, claiming to have been afflicted by demonic possession at the hands of their neighbors. Many of the stories of Hartford were incredibly bizarre. One
woman claimed that Satan had caused her to speak with a Dutch accent. Another eyewitness said she saw her neighbors transform into large black hounds. And several people claimed to have seen witches dancing with the devil at night. Between 168 uh 62 and 1663, 12 people were accused of witchcraft and four were
executed. Those accused included Giddy Iris, Judith Varllet, Nathaniel and Rebecca Goldsmith, Andrew and Mary Sanford. Okay, so Andrew and Mary. So actually um both of them were tried and he him is a witch as well, right? So, they were supposedly in this coven like this this uh this this Okay, I'll read more about it, but it says Mary Barnes,
John and Elizabeth Black Leech, and Katherine Palmer and James Wakeley and Elizabeth Seager. Okay, then it says there's a picture of a witch being hanged. And it says in 1663, Nathaniel and Rebecca Greenmith, Mary Barnes, and Mary Sanford were hanged. Okay, so I hear different things about what she hanged because he did remarry and have more kids and stuff, but um they had
like five kids already, right? And so I don't know it's like it's it might have been her she came back and was under a different name or something but so but in 1663 uh so so following these deaths the colonial governor John Winthrup Jr. began to question the value of evidence in the witch trials as well as the possible agendas of the witnesses. As a
result he established more objective criteria for witch trials that required at least two witnesses for each alleged act of witchcraft. And in some cases, he personally intervened and overturned or reversed verdicts. Okay, so that's like one thing where their name just pops up. Okay, that's like but that's like in this, you know, Hartford Gazette or
something. It's like a big an important paper, but I'll I'll tell you like um more. Okay, so um I know there's this woman. Okay, so here she is. So this is a her this woman's name is Lorie Sanford and she is a Sanford as well. Well, she's a well, I'm a different name name, but I have but so this is one of my ancestors. Okay, so this is from September 20th,
2013. It says Mary Sanford and the forgotten Connecticut witch trials. Says, okay, so this woman's an author and she's a descendant of Mary Sanford. Okay, so she's probably a cousin of mine, right? So she writes, "So halfway through writing book number three in the Winds of Freedom series," because she's a this, you know, supernatural writer or something. She said, "I'm already excited about my next project. When I
discovered my heritage, it really was an obvious choice. Someday after a lot of time and research, I hope to honor my eight times great grandmother, probably my eight times great-g grandandmother as well, with a novel version of her story. For now, here are the facts. The story strikes a personal chord with me. Maybe it's just because I don't like seeing
people suffer for unjust reasons. This the entire family of Andrew and Mary Sanford certainly did. Andrew Sanford immigrated from England around 1632 and settled in Hartford with his uncle Andrew Warner. That's actually um Marilyn Manson's last name Warner. Anyway, it says he married a couple of
women of unknown heritage named Mary. Soon after in 1657 he was made freeman and then chimney m um chimney viewer in 1662 the win documents call Andrew a pump maker as a physician John Winrop Jr. the governor of Connecticut evidently treated the Sanford children. The family was living on North Main
Street in 1662. Now they've been dead for hundreds of years and so I don't think it's a doxing. Okay. But it says in the March of that year, John Kelly's eight-year-old daughter, Elizabeth, was stricken with a severe stomach pain. In her agony, the girl blamed Goody Iris, the woman known for spreading stories of her meetings with the devil. She begged her father to have the woman arrested
and with her dying breath said, "Goody Iris chokes me." If that weren't enough, physician Bray Rosier performed an autopsy on that girl, determining that she died of pre-natural causes. Let the witch hunt begin. Okay, so it says another woman experienced violent body motions and spoke in a Dutch accent as
she accused Rebecca Greenmith of witchcraft. Greensmith, referred to by John Whiting as a lewd, ignorant, and considerably aged woman, broke under interrogation and testified in court against her husband. She related stories of strange creatures following him in the woods and his possession of supernatural strength. She said that the
devil appeared to her first in the form of a deer and that he had frequent use of her body. She described meetings in the uh woods attended by good weaves good wives Seager Sanford and Iris. She recounted a story of her and several neighbors meeting under a tree on the green near her home to dance and have a
battle a bottle of sack. So Andrew Samford was accused of witchcraft on June 6, 1662 and tried in court soon after. He and his wife were both indicted for witchcraft or for holding public meetings other than those prescribed by the elders or for dealings
with Satan. Among the jury, some thought guilty, some strongly suspected he was therefore acquitted. Mary was found guilty. And there's a picture of the gravestone of Andrew and Mary's oldest son, Andrew. Okay, they have that in Milford, Connecticut. Anyway, it says, "No record of Mary's execution has ever been found, though historians believe
she was hanged." John M. Taylor states in his book, Witchcraft Delusion in Colonial Connecticut that she was executed. Further evidence to support this theory comes from the simple fact that Andrew moved to Milford five years later and remarried. However, some sources disagree. The colonial history of Hartford states that Mary Sanford was
convicted at first and was not long detained in jail. Like some weird specters of the spirit world, she disappeared. Could Mary Sanford have escaped the hands of her accusers? If so, did she join Andrew in Milford? The name of the second wife remains a mystery. While this version of the story may be unlikely, it's still an
interesting one for her hopeful descendants to entertain. One factor I do not fully comprehend is how Andrew and Mary Sanford came to be accused and tried. Rebecca Greenmith's testimony clearly implicated Mary as attending at least one of her mysterious meetings. I'm still unclear as to how Andrew Sanford was involved. One theory has to
do with his religious leanings. An article in the New England Historical Magazine refers to the Sanfords of Hartford as all Quakers, which have been classed with heretics, which may have classed them as heretics. You know, Quaker like Quaker Oats, like the the guy on the with the hat. Some believe the couple may have adopted the ideals
of Anne Hutcherson from Andrew's brother Thomas and Uncle Andrew Warner, who lived in Boston about five years. Their family may have been holding Bible studies in their home that ran contrary to the religious philosophies of their puritanical neighbors and government. I find it ironic that one of the main reasons people came into the new world was for religious freedom and then
tragedies like this occurred. The colonials did not understand the true worship of God is only made without coercion. In many ways, we still do not understand. So looking back on the story of my ancestors who lived long ago, on the people who gave me my life and my name, I gain a lesson to take with me.
Treat people with compassion and do not judge them when their viewpoint is different from your own. Perhaps you may learn something, however small, from everyone you encounter. I've learned a lot from your life, Mary. In the end, I hope you really did outwit your foes and live a long super secret spy life with your beloved. Hey, a girl can dream. And
