Not far from this
village, deep within the woods, lived a cunning fox spirit. This wasn't just any fox. It had lived for many years and had mastered the art of transformation. It could take on any form it wished, but it especially enjoyed becoming human. This allowed it to wander into the village, savor the sights and smells,
and most of all, enjoy the delicious cooked food that humans made. One day, while disguised in the village, the fox spirit overheard whispers about the beautiful unmarried daughter and her discerning taste. A mischievous thought sparked in its mind, a challenge amused to itself. I shall win her heart. I will
appear as the most handsome and learned scholar she has ever seen. The very next morning, the plan was set in motion. The fox spirit transformed itself into a striking young scholar dressed in fine robes. It went to the riverbank, a place the village women often visited, and sat
gracefully beneath a large tree. It opened a book of sacred texts, and began to read aloud, its voice carrying across the water, enchanting and melodic, just as the fox spirit had hoped. The young woman soon arrived at the river to fetch water. Her eyes immediately fell upon the impressive
scholar. She saw his handsome face, heard his captivating voice, and was instantly mesmerized. This was the man she had been dreaming of. She rushed home to tell her parents, her heart fluttering with excitement. Her parents were overjoyed. To have such a distinguished and learned scholar ask for their daughter, Sand was a stroke of
incredible fortune. They didn't hesitate. They quickly met with the scholar, who was charming and polite, and arranged the marriage. The suitor gracefully accepted their hospitality and soon a grand wedding was held. The new husband moved into the family home and for a full month there was feasting and celebration. The fox spirit in its
human guys enjoyed the endless supply of delicious food and the comforts of human life. But as the days passed, it grew restless. It missed the wild freedom of the forest, its true home. One evening, it turned to its new bride and said, "My love, it is time you met my family." They live in a village on the other side
of the woods. "Let us prepare for a journey." The bride's parents were sad to see her go, but understood it was her duty to join her husband's family. Reluctantly, they agreed. The couple set off the next day. They walked for hours, leaving the familiar village paths behind and venturing deeper and deeper into the
dense forest. The bride noticed a change in her husband. The charming scholar she had married was becoming strangely quiet, his demeanor growing cold and distant. As they passed a beautiful, clear pond shimmering in the sunlight, the bride felt tired. "Let's rest here for a while," she suggested, wanting a
moment to soothe her growing unease. Her husband stopped and turned to her, his eyes glinting strangely. "Be silent," he warned, his voice sharp. "Do not question me, or I shall reveal my true form." His threat was so bizarre, so out of character that it startled her. A
flicker of alarm mixed with a defiant curiosity rose within her. "Show me," then she challenged, not truly believing his words. In an instant, the world seemed to warp. The handsome scholar twisted and contorted, shrinking and sprouting fur. Before her stood not a
man, but a large red fox, its eyes burning with an ancient intelligence. I am no man, it declared, its voice now a guttural snarl. I am a spirit of this forest, and you are now bound to me. You will be my cook. You will serve me, and
if you value your life, you will obey my every command." Paralyzed with terror, the young woman could do nothing but follow. The fox spirit led her to a hidden dwelling, a crude hut deep in the heart of the woods. Her life became a nightmare of servitude. Days bled into weeks. Her only purpose was to cook
meals for her captor, all the while praying desperately for a rescue that seemed impossible. One afternoon, while the fox spirit was out hunting, a crow landed on a branch near the hut. It tilted its head, seeming to notice the woman's profound sadness. It coded softly, and in that
sound, she sensed an offer of help. With trembling hands, she found a dried palm leaf and a piece of charcoal. She quickly scribbled a message describing her terrible plight and her location in the forest. She tied the leaf to the crow's leg, and the brave bird took flight, heading straight for her old village. The crow found her family's
home and delivered the message to her three brothers. Reading their sister's desperate words, they were filled with a mix of fury and fear. Without a moment's delay, they vowed to rescue her and set out for the forest. Their journey was not just a race against time. It was also a strange scavenger hunt. The youngest brother, known for his gentle
nature, found a stray donkey wandering near the woods and decided to bring it along. The middle brother, who was quick and nimble, managed to catch a very large buzzing beetle, which he kept in a small clay pot. And the eldest, the strongest of the three, picked up a thick fallen palm trunk and a heavy iron
wash basin he found discarded by a stream. They had no clear plan, but they felt these odd items might be useful. Following the crow's guidance, they finally reached the forest dwelling. Their sister, seeing them approach, was overwhelmed with relief, but also fear. She quickly motioned for them to be silent and hid them up in the loft of
the hut just before the fox spirit was due to return. Soon enough, the creature came home, sniffing the air. I smell humans," it growled, its eyes narrowing with suspicion. From their hiding place, the brothers peeked down and saw their beloved sister standing next to the monstrous creature. A wave of fear washed over them. In their haste to
reach the hut, they had drunk a great deal of water from a forest pond, and now, in their terror, their bladders gave way. A sudden cascade of water poured down from the loft, drenching the room below. "What is this deluge? What is this flood? The fox spirit demanded
looking up at the ceiling in fury. His wife thinking fast replied nervously. It is only thee, the nature of my brothers. They have come to meet you and are expressing their excitement. The fox spirit was suspicious but intrigued. Let them speak then, it commanded. The
youngest brother, hidden in the dark, took the large beetle and used it to irritate the donkey he had brought with him. The donkey let out a deafening, horrifying bray that shook the entire hut. "Why does your brother have such a harsh voice?" The spirit wondered aloud, a little unsettled. "Now, let me see a
leg," it demanded. The eldest brother pushed the end of the heavy palm trunk through a crack in the loft floor. The fox spirit stared at the thick, rough appendage, unnerved by its size and texture. Show me his belly, it called out next. The brothers worked together
to lower the massive round iron wash basin. Such size, such a strange voice, such enormous features. The fox spirit, who relied on cunning and deception, was now faced with something it couldn't comprehend. Its courage failed. A primal fear took hold and it turned and fled
from the hut, disappearing into the darkness of the forest. This was the chance the brothers were waiting for. They scrambled down from the loft, embraced their sister, and quickly gathered whatever food and valuables they could find. As they fled, they barred the door of the hut from the outside, trapping the spirit should it
return too soon. When the fox spirit finally crept back, it found itself locked out. Peeking through a crack, it saw the hut had been ransacked and its bride was gone. It had been tricked, outsmarted by mere humans. A furious rage burned within it, and it vowed to have its revenge. The very next
day, the fox spirit transformed itself back into the handsome scholar and calmly walked to the family's home, planning to charm his way back into their lives. But the brothers were ready. They recognized the deception immediately. Pretending to welcome him, they said, "Welcome back, brother-in-law.
You must be weary from your travels. Please join us for a ritual cleansing bath to refresh yourself." They led their guest to a special spot prepared for the bath where a reed mat was placed over what looked like a platform. They invited him to sit, but this was no platform. It was an old deep well,
cleverly covered with a fragile lattice of thin sticks. The moment the fox spirit sat down, the sticks snapped. With a cry of surprise, it plunged into the dark, watery depths below. Without wasting a second, the family worked together, filling the well with heavy stones and earth, sealing the malevolent
spirit within forever. The young woman, now safe, wanted to honor the strange and terrifying ordeal she had survived. To ensure the spirit remained bound, and to mark the place of her victory, she planted a sacred shrub directly over the filled-in well. For the rest of her days, she tended to it faithfully. And
