This episode presents a detailed DNA analysis of the host Psyche conducted through the MyTrueAncestor platform, which cross-references modern genetic signatures against archaeological DNA samples from over 150 ancient civilizations [1:19-1:47]. The analysis, introduced at [0:10-0:26], traces Psyche's ancestry back thousands of years using archaeogenetics methodology. At [2:17-3:18], the explainer introduces haplogroups as 'ancient family crests' and reveals that Psyche's Y-DNA is dominated by the R1b marker at 72.9%, while his maternal line shows high frequencies of H1 and H3 at 23.6%, both hallmarks of Western European populations. The Iron Age Celtic connections are detailed at [3:22-4:14], identifying strong links to the Dobunni of the Cotswolds, the Cantiiachi of Kent, and the Brigantes of Northern England. The Great Germanic Migration period [4:36-6:02] emerges as central to Psyche's genetic profile, with his DNA showing strongest matches to the Alamanni, Franks, Celtic Dal Riata, and Saxons—tribes that swept across Europe between 375-568 AD. Viking Age heritage is acknowledged at [6:08-6:32], connecting Psyche to Norwegian, Danish, and Icelandic Norse populations. Most notably, at [6:35-7:05], Psyche is identified as being in the top 99% genetic match to an elite Celtic female burial from Magdalenenberg, Germany, dating to 530 BC, and further down the matches is an elite Iron Age warrior from Bohemia (250 BC) representing the La Tène culture [7:08-7:23]. The episode concludes at [7:34-8:21] by reconciling ancient ancestry with modern populations, noting that Psyche's closest living relatives today are the Welsh, followed by Southwest English and West Germans.
This episode appears to frame DNA ancestry not merely as statistical data but as a narrative bridge between past and present identity. The explainer suggests that Psyche's genetic makeup functions as a 'biological record' [4:32-4:33] of historical collision and synthesis—specifically, the meeting of stable indigenous Celtic populations with mobile post-Roman Germanic migrants. The presentation continues the pattern of treating ancestry as mystically significant, positioning the host's DNA as containing 'ancient, forgotten stories' literally 'stitched into cells' [8:37-8:41], language that echoes metaphysical or esoteric framing more than strictly scientific reporting. The episode implies that genetic heritage carries cultural and perhaps spiritual resonance, inviting the audience to contemplate their own 'time machine' DNA [8:32-8:34]. This approach appears consistent with the show's broader engagement with consciousness and identity—extending that inquiry into the biological and historical substrate of selfhood.

Welcome back to the Explainer Class. I am absolutely thrilled you're tuning in today because we are diving into a truly fascinating subject. We're going to unpack the ancestral DNA of John Bates, who a lot of you probably know better by his online alias Psyche. But listen, we aren't just going to rattle off a boring list of percentages today. No way. We're going to use the power of
archaeogenetics to trace his actual family narrative back thousands of years. So, what exactly happens when we put Psyche's DNA under a historical microscope? Well, I want you to think of this explainer not as reviewing some dry spreadsheet, but as stepping directly into a genetic time machine. Archaeogenetics is amazing because it
lets us move way past broad guesses. We get to see exactly who our ancient ancestors were, where they lived, and sometimes literally the very graves they were buried in. Here's a quick look at our syllabus for today's journey. First, we'll properly introduce Psyche's DNA. Then, we'll examine his ancient family crests. After that, we jump back in time to meet the Iron Age Celts, follow up with the chaos
of the Great Germanic Migration, and finally, we'll get up close and personal with some Vikings and elite ancient ancestors. It's a pretty wild road trip, so let's dive right in. Section one, welcome to Psyche's DNA. Our primary source material for today is the official MyTrueAncestor report for John Bates. Now, this comprehensive DNA report doesn't just look at modern
populations like a standard test might. Instead, its analysis engine took his specific genetic signature and cross-referenced it against archaeological DNA samples spanning over 150 ancient civilizations. So, it's taking the modern DNA hidden inside his cells today and comparing it to actual ancient remains pulled right out of the earth. The executive summary of this
report perfectly captures his heritage. It describes it as, quote, "A predominantly Northwestern European genetic heritage with deep roots in the migration period Germanic and Celtic worlds. Just keep that concept in mind as we progress. This British Germanic interface is the absolute core of Psyche's heritage. He is literally the biological convergence of native Celtic
Britons and the Germanic tribes that arrived much later. Section two, the ancient family crests. Okay, before we go out and meet the tribes, we need a quick biology lesson. What exactly is a haplogroup? Well, I like to explain haplogroups by thinking of them as ancient family crests that are stitched directly into your cells. These are specific genetic mutations passed down virtually unchanged over
thousands and thousands of years. Y-DNA goes from father to son and mtDNA goes from mother to daughter. And because they mutate so rarely, scientists can trace these biological family crests all the way back to human origins. And it is fascinating how incredibly dominant one specific family crest is for Psyche. When analyzing his Y-DNA, which traces
the paternal line of his ancient matches, an overwhelming 72.9% carry the R1b marker. Now, R1b is the absolute hallmark haplogroup of Western European populations. Then, on the maternal side, his matches show a high frequency of H1 and H3 at 23.6%, which again, are incredibly common across Western and Northern
Europe. So, his cellular biology perfectly echoes the geography of his ancestors. Moving on to section three, meeting the Iron Age Celts. Just to keep us all historically oriented, let's briefly map out the eras his ancestors lived through. We definitely see echoes stretching as far back as the Bronze Age from around 3,000
to 800 BC, where he has these deep underlying connections to the Bell Beaker culture. But his story really begins to take a specific solid shape in the Iron Age running up to about 43 AD before transitioning right into the migration period and eventually the Viking Age. Psyche's Iron Age connections are heavily heavily dominated by Celtic tribes. These are the ancestral populations who inhabited
Britain and Western Europe long before there was ever any Roman contact. We're looking at really strong links to the Celtic Dobunni from the Cotswolds region in Britain, the Cantiiachi down in Kent, and even the Celtic Brigantes way up in Northern England. But the really crucial point here is the contrast happening within his DNA. On one side of the genetic ledger, we have these very stable indigenous
pre-Roman Celtic Britons, like the Dobunni of the Cotswolds, who had lived on those islands for generations. But on the other side, we have highly mobile post-Roman Germanic tribes who are just about to enter the picture. So, Psyche's genetics serve as this beautiful biological record of two vastly different worlds colliding. Section four, the Great Germanic
Migration. The migration period, which spans roughly from 375 to 568 AD, is incredibly important for understanding Psyche's DNA. Think of this era as a massive continent-wide game of historical musical chairs. When the Western Roman Empire finally collapsed, the old borders completely
vanished, and massive populations of Germanic peoples just began moving across Europe, eventually settling in places like Britain, Gaul, Spain, and Italy. And when his DNA is matched against those 150 ancient civilizations, his strongest connections overwhelmingly belong to this exact migration period. The Alamanni right at the top, followed
by the Franks, the Celtic Dobunni, and the Saxons. This list literally reads exactly like a historical roster of the very tribes that swept across Northern and Western Europe during that great game of musical chairs. Let's isolate the top three for a second, because they really define his core engine identity. Coming in at number one, we have the Alamanni, which was a formidable
confederation of Germanic tribes situated right on in Upper Rhine. At number two, the Franks, the famous founders of medieval France and Germany. And holding strong at number three, tying him right back to Britain, are the Celtic Dal Riata. It is just a perfect tripart harmony of Northwestern European history written right into his genetic code.
Section five, Vikings and elite ancestors. Now, quickly before we look at the really specific individual grave sites, we have to acknowledge the Viking Age heritage present in his breakdown. Sykes' DNA matches with Norwegian, Danish, and Icelandic Vikings. And honestly, this makes perfect sense geographically and historically. It
totally reflects the widespread Norse settlement of Britain, Ireland, and northern France during the Viking Age, seamlessly blending in with his existing British and Germanic roots. All right, class, pay close attention to this part because it's wild. We aren't just looking at broad tribes anymore. We are looking at Sykes' absolute closest individual match in their entire database. This is a specific human
being. It's an elite Celtic burial from Magdalenenberg in southwestern Germany dating all the way back to 530 BC. This was a female from the aristocratic class of the early Iron Age Hallstatt period. Sykes is in the top 99% of all platform users for this specific match, meaning his genetic distance to this ancient aristocratic woman is incredibly remarkably small. And the elite
connections, they just don't stop there. A bit further down the list, at match number eight, we find an elite Iron Age warrior from Bohemia dating to 250 BC. This male sample represents the Celtic La Tène culture that completely dominated Central Europe right before those Germanic migrations even began. Just imagine that for a second. The DNA
of an ancient elite warrior from 250 BC is surviving right now today inside Sykes' modern cells. So, let's tie this whole biology lesson together. When the report compares Sykes' DNA to modern populations, his closest living relatives today are the Welsh, followed by the Southwest English and West Germans. And when you put that side by
side with his ancient ancestors, the Allemani of Germany, the Franks, and the Celtic Dobunni of Southwest England, it is a totally perfect match. The ancient past is directly explaining the present day. And this is what proves the true power of archaeogenetics. We can see how beautifully the ancient DNA data validates his modern genetic makeup. It
builds a cohesive, incredibly personal family story of indigenous Celtic stability in Britain, intricately layered with the dynamic sweeping movements of the Germanic tribes during the migration period, and sprinkled with those Norse explorers. So, I'll leave you all with this final thought as we wrap up today's explainer. We've seen the Celtic aristocrats and the Germanic tribes literally hiding in
Psyche's biology. And it really makes you wonder, if your DNA was a time machine, who would step out? What ancient, forgotten stories are currently stitched into your own cells, just waiting to be read? Thank you so much for joining me today to explore the fascinating genetic history of John Bates. Keep wondering, keep learning, and I'll catch you in the next explainer.
