because he can already see the marketplace, the trial, the verdict, and the executioner's face. And in that moment, he realizes something brutal. Guilt doesn't need proof. Guilt just needs a mind. He says, "How will they ever find a juror merciful enough to acquit Mimi smeared in triple blood?" And he remembers the prophecy. The

Not a normal crowd. A hungry crowd. The kind of crowd that doesn't want justice. It wants a show. Lucius keeps his eyes down like he's staring into the underworld,
expecting to meet Presurpa any second. But then out of the corner of his eye, he notices something that makes his brain stutter. Everyone is laughing. Not one person is solemn. Not one face is grieving. The whole city is shaking with mirth while he's being marched like a sacrificial victim through every street. Every corner of purification procession
except the thing being purified is him. And they bring him to the forum. And then the crowd screams, "No, no, no, no, not here. Take it to the theater." Because nothing says we're serious like moving the murder trial to a stadium. The theater fills instantly. People cling to pillars, drape statues, hang from windows, half visible like ghosts
with tickers, and Lucius gets placed center stage in the orchestra like the lead actor in a tragedy he didn't audition for. The prosecutor stands up, an elderly commander of the Night Watch, and he's timed by a little jar of water dripping drop by drop. like let the gods measure how long it takes to destroy a man. He tells the crowd this is no laughing matter, which is already
hilarious given the crowd is basically vibrating. He says he found Lucius at midnight, sword drawn, three men dying at his feet, bodies still quivering in blood. He says Lucius fled into Millow's house. He says providence prevented his escape. He calls Lucius a foreign defiler. He demands harsh sentence and the subtext is obvious. This city must
prove it can punish even if it punishes the wrong person. Now Lucius is told to defend himself. And at first he can only weep not because the prosecutor is convincing, but because his own conscience is loud and messy and panicked. Then he finds courage. He admits he was tipsy. He admits he drew his sword. And then he lays out the scene. He returned to Milo's house and
found thieves forcing the door. Bolts torn away. A plan to murder the people inside. One thief is rallying the others like a warlord. Catch them sleeping. Leave no one alive. We only escape if we erase every witness. Lucius says he did what a good citizen should do. He confronted them with a shortsord. He tried to scare them off. They didn't
run. They attacked. He says the general grabbed his hair, bent him back, went for a stone. Lucius struck first and dropped him. Another bit into his capucious stabbed him between the shoulders. A third rushed him. Lucius put steel through his chest. Then he says, "Basically, what motive would I have? I didn't know these men. I gained
nothing. I defended my host and the city." And while he's pleading, he looks up and the audience is crying with laughter. Even Milo, kindly host like a father, dissolved in mirth, Lucius realizes he's not in a courtroom. He's inside a joke. Now, a woman in black rushes in with a child. Behind her, an
old crone and rags. They wail. They wave olive branches. They collapse beside a beer where the corpses lie covered. They scream for justice, blood for blood, mercy for the orphan. Punish the murderer. And the senior magistrate rises and says, "Yes, yes, the deed is admitted, but we need the names of his
accompllices. We'll get the truth by torture fire." Will whips Lucius is about to be turned into a lesson. Then the crone says, "Uncover the bodies. Let the city see." And they order Lucius to do it with his own hands. Lucius resists. They force his hand. He pulls the cloth back and reality flips like a trap door. A bod's armp three swollen
wines skkins punctured pissed axi where Lucius stabbed the thieves and the entire theater erupts. The laughter that was carefully repressed becomes a flood. People clutch their stomachs. People choke. People point at him like he's the funniest suffering they've ever witnessed. Ush stands frozen like a statue. not figuratively like
spiritually petrified. A living column in a room of cackling humans. Milo finally leads him away through side streets. Lucius is shaking, humiliated, still bleeding inside. And then the magistrates come in in full regalia to soothe him. They explain this was the annual holiday honoring the god of
laughter and the festival must be embellished by some new gest. And congratulations Luciusu were the jest. They offer him honors, patron status, even a bronze statue. Lucius basically says, "Thanks. Keep the statue. Give it to someone worthier because how do you accept an award for being publicly humiliated as entertainment?" Lucius
tries to act cheerful. Then a servant invites him to Betheena's party. He refues fear still lives in him. Milo drags him to the baths. Lucius walks like a man trying to disappear. Everyone's still laughing at him. He eats dinner like a starving animal. Claims a headache. Retreats to bed. Then Photus enters and Fotus is different. No playful teasing, no bright eyes, just
guilt carved into her face. She says, "It was me." She offers a leather strap like she deserves punishment. Lucius refuses on it. Matters that he refuses. He says he'd rather slash the strap to pieces than touch her. Then she explains the secret. Her mistress Pam Philill is a witch. She enslaves elements, commands
spirits, moves, stars, forces gods, forces gods, and she's obsessed with a handsome B ocean youth. Pamfield told Fodus to steal hair clippings from the barber shop strands to use in a spell. Fodus gets caught. The barber humiliates her. She panics and instead of hair from the boy, she grabs hair from goat skin bags being trimmed nearby blondish.
Similar enough, a lie offered to a woman who punishes failure. Pampil performs the right. Incense, bizarre relics, grim materials, offerings, water, milk, honey, me, and she burns the braided hairs. And what responds? Not the boy, the wine skins. They come banging at the door, pulled by the spells, stenched like a hook in the nose. And Lucius,
shrunk in the dark, heroically slays them. Not men, bags. So yes, Lucius wasn't a murderer. He was a puncturer of inflatable problems. Lucius, fueled by curiosity and lust and ego, begs to watch Panfil's magic. Fotius hesitates, but love makes people reckless. They spy
through a crack in the attic door. Panful disroes, opens a chest, takes ointment from a little alabaster box, smears herself head to toe. She murmurs to her lamp like it's a living witness. Then her body trembles, shimmers, feathers grow, wings harden, nose curves into a beak, nails bend into talons. Pamphile becomes an owl, a living symbol
of night knowledge and predation. She hoots and lifts off and glides into darkness. Lucius is wrecked by wonder. And now he wants it to. Lucius begs Fodus for ointment. Fodus warns him, "You get wings and you might never come back." He swears he'll return. He swears she's his only desire. He asks a way back. She tells him the reversal recipe
simple, almost insulting in its simplicity. And she sneaks the box. Lucia smears himself. He flaps his arms. No feathers. Instead, bristles hide. Who's tail? Long ears. Lucius becomes an ass. And yes, the text twists the knife with one small consolation. But the real
point is everything noble in him has been reduced to a beast with human reason trapped inside. He tries to reach roses on the shrine of aonagods of horses and asses, but a stable hand catches him and beats him. Then, like fate piling on, briggins smash into the house, loot everything, and load Lucius
and the other animals with treasure and drive them into the mountains. Lucius sees roses in a garden salvation, but realizes if he turns human again in front of Briggins, they'll kill him or accuse him of sorcery. So he turns away from freedom and keeps chewing hay as an ass. This sequence is one of our police nastiest jokes because it's not really a
joke. It's a diagnosis. First, the trial isn't about justice. It's about spectacle. The city is a single organism that feeds on public humiliation. They move the trial to the theater because the truth was never the point. The crowd was second. The god of laughter is treated like a deity that must be fed every year. That's the dark ritual hiding inside the comedy. The community
requires a scapegoat, a human offering, socially slaughtered so everyone can feel alive together. Third, Pamale is the thesis statement of the whole novel. Transformation is real, but it's never free. Magic doesn't elevate you just because you want it. It changes you according to what you actually are underneath your self-image. Lucius
wanted wings. He got a lesson. He wanted mastery. He got humility. He wanted hidden knowledge. He got a body built for burden. And the roses, the roses are the brutal truth of the cure. Salvation is always nearby, but timing matters. Context matters. And sometimes you can see the exit clearly and still can't take it without getting murdered by the
