fear um that I'd be walking with a pushing a shopping cart up the street. Like that was his like biggest fear. there's no street lights there. Uh it's like right on the cliffs and there's like you know Indian burial ground and it's like very it's like very um there's peacocks are natur or like they brought in peacocks and stuff like that in the 30s 1930s and so peacocks poop all over the cars and they they wake you up in the morning going and there's a statue of Neptune in the
center of the town and like the uh the the sports team are called the sea kings but I didn't go to the school. Yeah, I know sassy there like anything with animal sacrifice is like we don't have the right to sacrifice an animal's life like I mean it's like maybe for like food and stuff like that like not kill it ourselves but I'm saying u it's really stupid to think that you can sacrifice anything that's not you or you

You cannot have anything on your roof except for this red tile. There's also a movie called the tribes of palsis about just
how crazy the city is and like how like you know um people like will move there like when you know they they come up and stuff like that and it's like a whole different kind of like lifestyle. right up the street from here. I'll show you. I mean, I was I now I live a few minutes away from there, but here's where my school was. Um, so right there and see this is Roondo Beach right here. I don't know if you can see my mouse, but that see that the beach right there? That's where I live now. I live on the on the beach right there, but u So this is where the PD is,
right? See all the red roof, all the red brick um or the red tile roofs, right? And then let's see what else we got. Um, here's the statue of Neptune in the city. Okay, this was a gift from Italy. It's a replica of their own Neptune
statue. The I guess the penis of it was stolen at a certain time and other parts of it were stolen. It's kind of like the statue on the Simpsons, like the Jebid Springfield. Like they keep having to replace it. There it is right there. So there's the um statue of Neptune. They have these these things called the nariads which are around him and they're they're spraying water out of their
boobs and that was really controversial in the 30s when that came out, right? Um so this is like called the plaza. This is right up the street from my house and uh it looks like this old kind of style Italian plaza and uh it's called Mal Malaga Cove. And let me see if I have the anything else I can show you. I mean there's there's just beautiful cliffs.
There's a lot of haunted places. There's a lighthouse. There's um really it's really a magical place to live too. I mean it's it's very haunted too. It is very haunted like just living there constantly um sensing stuff. Um especially like and there's like it was on an Indian burial
ground too. So it's kind of like that movie Poltergeist. It's like, um, okay. So, I'll show you my church. You'll freak out. You'll be like, "That's a church." So, this is like the church. The church the church was like they took it they took like this pe these people's
like mansion and turned it into the church. Uh, and it's really cool. I'll show you a few pictures of it. And here's the And so this is where this is where I would go to church. Okay, this is what it looked like. Um I mean my my family didn't go to church. I just went to like youth group at a certain time kind of for social reasons. But um

Okay. Oh, here it is. History of the neighborhood church. Can you see this? Yeah. 1864 to 1931. The history of the neighborhood church really begins with the birth of John Joseph Hagerty in London, England in 1864. By 1887, he had earned what amounts to a master's degree and immigrated to the US, uh, landing in St.
Louis where he worked for a major dry goods retailer and discovered that he had a real aptitude for retail. So there's the paper pal or his bulletin. There's the church right there. See how pretty it was? Like look at the trees and stuff. That's him. I guess that's the Hagerties. And so the the boot he was a bootleger too, though. And so there's a little cave out there where
they would bootleg, right? It says he then moved to Duth, Minnesota. In 1902, he married one one Bertha Schneider. 1905 found him in Los Angeles where he got into women's clothing. Not literally the business. He founded a women's clothing store where he cleverly named the New York Clo and Suit House, aka Hagerties for short. Okay. And there's
the department store he used to own, Hagerty's downtown store, right? Uh the business boomed in 1912. Those pre-income tax days. He had built a mansion at 333 West Adams in the fashionable district in LA just prior to Beverly Hills assuming the position. So he built like a castle over there. Look at this freaking castle. Los Angeles was pretty uh wild in those days and clearly he felt he needed to be able to defend
against an attack by the Tutonic Knights. By the way, the Homeman United Methodist Church is now on the site. He also built a weekend home at 1800 East Ocean in Long Beach and then I've seen a picture of the house. I don't seem to have it. So Bertha loved it at 333 3330 West Adams and had melded into the LA High society social scene. But two mansions were evidently not enough and
there was this new development down the coast called Pal's Birdies where in 1927 Hagerty bought five lots off the bluff bluff just below Malaga Cove Plaza and around the corner from the now Malaga Cove school that's where I went to um seven years of school um at that campus but it was called a different school at that time. So says 421 Po Delmare was the address in those days. Pal's verdies
was the end of the earth with dirt streets, wooden water pipes, and hardly any residents. But the plans were wonderful. And toward the end of the 1920s, the future looked bright with unlimited possibilities. So there's what it looked like before it was developed. Right now there's all these houses all over it, right? But that's um and so this is like before, right? And there's there's the tower on the school I went to. It has like this kind of cool tower
and there's a rent there's the neighborhood church right there. says JJ hired then prominent architect Armand Monaco to design a 15,000 square foot single-level Spanish revival mansion on the bluff including sixcar garage, four bedrooms, three baths, two waterfalls, a large pool, fish pond, and a partridge and a pear tree. So there's the church right there. And then it says he
imported Italian artists Achilles Dissy and Al Alfredo Orceli to do the custom artwork and over-the-top faux fresco in Vogue at the time, paying them exorbitant sum of 10 $100 per day. Permits were issued in January 1928 and the place was finally uh finished by the following October under the apparently efficient guidance of contractor Charles
Anderson. Here's a picture just in case you need topnotch work done. Look at there's Mr. Thomas Anderson in charge of this huge project, right? He looks like a little little painter like like a little kind of scary. Okay. Then it says, "The place had such advanced time features as a full gravity heating, electric lights throughout, the
obligatory servants caretaker quarters, and even a built-in sound system. The ornate iron work was made by the same company that made the Hurst Castle." And so there's one of the rooms, right? And we would do Halloween. We would do these like Halloween things where we dress like scare people like you know dress up in like these c we turned the whole place into like a laboratory and stuff. It was such a cool place. By the late
1929 the famous pier was added. That's the beach pier that I go to. I suspect by this time that Bertha and JJ were not getting along all that well because in 1930 a second master bedroom for him was added adjacent to the original which overlooked the Santa Monica Bay. It is now the church office that looks only into the scalloped stone wall that by then surrounded the property. The
Hagerties came four times to oversee construction and to fully furnish the place, but they never moved in. Can you believe it? And little did anyone suspect the economic cliff that loomed just over the horizon. In October 1929, the stock market crashed, ushering in the most dire economic times in the country's history. The only pre precedent being the panic of 1837 for
which Martin Benern was wrongly blamed. But let's not get into that because no one remembered it then or few do now. The business at Hagerty's highend stores took a nose dive and by the mid 1931 he was forced to put his masterpiece up for sale. We now leave the Hagerty mansion in 1931. The store will be picked up in part two. So that's that that's like I mean I'm sorry I went into the history of my city but I mean it's kind of
interesting I think. Uh you would love to go to the Hurst Castle. Yeah, I would too. I mean, I think we've driven by it. It's like in Northern California. Uh yeah, guys, it's so interesting, guys. Like, we I Other people have stories, too. Like, look, it's great. Um,

And so the the manager wanted to marry her and stuff, but my dad started coming in for lunch and stuff. And I just because it was like nearby and he thought she was real, you know, gorgeous or whatever. >> And she she had the hots for him instead of the owner. >> Well, then I think he made her laugh because like one day he's like, "Excuse
me, ma'am." He's like, "You dropped a pickle on my shoe." And then he had put that there himself, you know, and she's like, "I did not like." And then she >> Oh my god. then that he recovered from that and then I guess he started having like um like bladder issues. I don't know. Like stuff like he like blood when he peed and stuff like that. And then um and but he was just going through a bunch of tests and I was like and I don't know why the test why it took so long for them to diagnose but by the time like they came back with it they're like well it's already spread
into like the lymph nodes and like it's it's like so basically it was like just say like you know say your say your goodbyes you know you're know it's kind of terrible how fast I mean it was yeah >> how much time since they told you that before Oh yeah. Well, they told us that and he

That was the day that he announced >> and then he passed away like that was like in March 25th or something. And then like he passed away like April 13th

um the nurses and stuff like he was thinking that they were doing stuff to him and stuff. And so they were like and they weren't going to like let her raise the baby. And so they were trying to adopt out this baby. And um so they uh eventually
my dad was able to adopt him and something. So my brother's a redhead. He went to UCLA and and uh he um he was real smart. He was in computers.
